About the Penciled Portraits Artist.
My name is Guy,
As a young man just out of the Air Force and quite confused about what I wanted to do in life, I decided that the only thing that didn't bore me to tears was, my first love, art. Yet, I knew I still had to make a living like everyone else so, I embarked on a journey into the very disciplined world of commercial art.
After studying for a couple of years and building my portfolio, it was off to Chicago, where I got really lucky and became an art director at a very large ad agency.
However, it just wasn't my cup of tea. Granted I was good at it. One should put all their energy into anything they are doing for a living. I did love film, you know doing commercials like Sunkist, Hallmark, Wendys,' Blue Cross Blue Shield and alot more.
Still, it wasn't satisfying. My favorite thing was doing portraits of my friends, family and the sometimes quirky people I worked with. They weren't normal like me. Yea, right!
Illustration and fine art always called me like some muse in the distance. Eventially I gave in and began to do it full time. I found there was a market for this kind of art, doing work for the Cincinnati Sympohony, The Seattle Symphony, P&G etc.
Over the years, my style began to develop into something that was distinctly mine. I was fast and accurate because of the very demainding discipline of commercial art. My own philosophy finally showed itself.
"It's not what you put in but rather what you leave out"
By doing it that way I could create portraits that pulled out the essense of a persons personality and expression. It sounds simple but, it is very ellusive. I don't always get it right the first time. I may have to do it twice. One to learn the face and the next one to get the accuracy and essence.
Portraits are what I love to do and share with the world.
